Tragically, one of our community’s homes burnt down on the morning of Sunday August 17th. Thanks to all those who called 911 to report the incident. In the next few days we will know what the family needs and how we can assist them. In the meantime, they want you to know they are very appreciative of the amount of support they have received. We will let you know how the community can help when the family has had time to prioritize their needs. They have insurance and, so far, are coping as well as can be expected. The family will let us know when or how we can be of assistance.
To avoid inundating the family with offers of help, please contact Lisa Turpin, the acting Emergency Social Services Director, who will forward all information to the family. You may contact Lisa at 604 921-9365

Requests so far:
- Their cat is missing it is a small black short haired female cat with yellow, green eyes answers to Puma. A window was open in the home so they are hopeful someone will be able to find Puma.
- Any photographs of Village events that included their son, Josarian and/or the family would be greatly appreciated.
- Permanent housing in Lions Bay or even West Vancouver is also something they are looking for.

Additional information of interest concerning the recent house fire.
We would like to send a huge thank you to our Lions Bay Fire Rescue team. This tragic event could have been so much worse. Our Volunteer Fire Fighters, who train every Wednesday night and 4 hours on the weekends to protect our community, did an outstanding job.
The cul-de-sac where the fire occurred was on a creek bed laced with trees. The neighbouring homes share a canopy of trees that extends to the front doors of four homes and the ocean side is also densely forested. Our crews were able to save the community from what could have been so much worse. Fortunately the family was out, 911 were called, the wind was calm and the morning was cool. Our Volunteer Fire Department was able to contain the fire to one home, preventing it from getting out of hand, which it could so easily have done.
Our Volunteer Fire Fighters, who worked tirelessly to avert a disaster, deserve a huge thanks and show of support. Their annual fundraising drive has begun and they are hosting their annual Fire Fighters Day on September 13th from 2 to 10 pm at Lions Bay Beach. Please come and support these Volunteers any way you can.
Sincerely
Lions Bay Emergency Social Services
Lisa Turpin

When the swallows return to Capistrano the daffodils will ahead of them in Lions Bay!
And with joy on every face
we will begin to trace
the springs of yesterday
from our youth of far away.
"Plant a Bulb Day" this year will be Sunday, 19th of October 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
Perhaps digging and planting is not your cup of tea, so to speak, but if last year is anything to go by, our many volunteers will be there for us as always. However, if you would like to support this delightful project, please place your bulb donations in the collection box, which will be located at the Lions Bay General Store. The bulbs will be collected every day and a tally will be displayed to witness our progress.
Many thanks for your spectacular support last year.

In Summer, the outdoors in Lions Bay is particularly to be enjoyed, be it in our gardens, on our trails in the forest or on the mountain, at the tennis courts, at the Beach, or (for the more hardy) IN the water. My neighbour Kathrin Mueller sent me the following note and photo:
Four of us swam from Lions Bay Beach to Brunswick Beach and back on Sunday morning, July 20, 2008, a distance of about 3km. We took a bit over an hour with several stops on the way to admire our amazing mountains, gleaming in the sunshine, and the beautiful waterfront homes along the shore. The sunny weather of the previous week had warmed the water to a quite comfortable temperature, but we all sped up when swimming past the mouth of Harvey Creek, feeling a big chill from the snow melting up in the mountains. After the swim, our West and North Vancouver friends joined us for brunch, admiring once more the unbeatable Lions Bay views.
We all enjoyed the swim tremendously and plan to do it again one day. (By Kathrin).

Historical Society's Annual Croquet Tournament |

Friday, 01 August 2008 |
On Saturday July 26, 2008, the Lions Bay Historical Society together with invited guests met on the Cox's well-manicured lawn for the Ninth Annual Croquet Tournament. Fortified with a glass or two of "Vin de Croquet", the gathering assembled at the starting stake. Master of Ceremonies Tony Cox called "Let the Games Begin", whereupon President Myron Loutet explained the Rules of Play in a manner designed to confuse the novices and ensure their demise from the contest.
In true and customary gentlemanly fashion, the Master allowed the Ladies to play first. Tensions mounted. Silence fell, apart from the gentle chatter of Harvey Brook. The perfume of roses filled the air as skillful mallets moved the coloured balls with great accuracy from hoop to hoop. Player Page, whose hat transfixed the entire group, soon took the lead, and although hotly pursued by the pack, Anne's blue ball was the first to strike the final stake. To cheers from the crowd, Player Page was declared Winner of the Ladies Contest.

The BC Ministry of Transportation reports that the highway north of Porteau Cove will be closed until Monday. They also note that there is a chance that the highway will open on Sunday but are unable to confirm a Sunday opening at this time. We will post updates on this news story and pictures of the slide area as they become available.

A cliff has collapsed onto the Sea to Sky Highway, closing the route between
Vancouver and Whistler for at least 24 hours.
The RCMP say a massive rock face fell onto the road about half a kilometre
north of Porteau Cove between Furry Creek and Lions Bay just before
midnight.
The route, Highway 99, and an adjacent railway, were buried under an
estimated 16,000 cubic metres of rocks, some the size of trucks,

The 2009 Squamish Wild at Art Festival will take place March 6th to the
15th, with the umbrella theme: Local Colour. ‘It’s time for our local
talents to get main stage and be front and centre,’ said Board
President Sonja Lebans. ‘This year we want to really brand our festival
as local.’ With the festival dates confirmed and a ‘buy-local’
attitude, Wild at Art volunteers are set to put these words into
action.

O Canada 2008
July 1 2008 was a perfect warm sunny day for the festive gathering at the Beach. Kim Thompson welcomed the crowd to Canada Day and MC-ed the proceedings, which began with a raising of the Flag by Brigitta Shore, flanked by resplendent RCMP Sergeant Kevin Bracewell, and the singing of O Canada led by Andrea Klas. Mayor Max Wyman spoke of the national and local significance of Canada Day for all of us. Max then presented the Outstanding Citizen Award to Rose Dudley, in recognition of her longstanding dedication to community matters, including the Gardening Group, local Scholarship adjudications, and on a wider sphere, the commendable "Project Hands" venture. Rose said, " Anyone could do what I've done". Not so Rose, your continual commitment is so worthy of recognition by our Village. We hope to read more about you in a later "NEWS".
