Well today was Easter Sunday once again, which for most is probably a lot more about chocolate and easter egg hunts than actual religeous context. I for one am the father of two small children, a four year old boy tosh and a six year old girl trinity. This year was by far the most excited easter for them. As in previous years my wife charlene has not given them any chocolate or sugary treats. It was plastic eggs filled with nuts and dried fruit for the first five easter's. But this easter we broke and allowed them to enjoy with the rest of the kids.

Property taxes can’t be avoided…but you may be able to postpone paying them
For some, paying municipal property taxes presents a cash flow hardship
that may result in the unnecessary sale of their property. Others may
just have a better use for the money, whether an investment opportunity
or something more frivolous like a vacation.
Those who qualify under the provisions of the BC Property Tax Deferral
Program may put off paying their property taxes until the death of the
owner(s) or transfer of the title to a new owner (other than a
surviving spouse).

Photography in Howe Sound/Lions Bay |

Spring photography in the Howe Sound/ Lions Bay area is one of my
favourite times of year. Days are getting slightly longer; clouds are
breaking up more and making interesting patterns in the sky; and the quality of light starts to take on a warmer tone taking over from
the cool blues and greys of the winter. With the slight increase in
temperature this time of year there is often low-level fog just before
sunrise, which allows for terrific opportunities to make very dramatic images early in the day.

Sustainability Principles Create Principled Sustainability |

What makes Lions Bay a liveable community ?
What would make it more liveable ?
How are we a complete community ? … In what ways are we not ?
How can we have a smaller environmental footprint and use land more efficiently ?
How do we best protect our green zone both inside and outside the Village boundaries ?
How does Lions Bay become a more sustainable community ?
Lions Bay citizens are both local and global citizens … Village
oriented and committed, while being well educated and caring about the
world that we live in and understanding the ‘tribal’ (local)
responsibility to embrace ‘global’ sustainability principles as an icon
for growth and development. Thus the adage, ‘Think Globally, Act
Locally’. It is in our local actions that the sustainability
principles can be used, whether it is our home, our community or voting
for people who incorporate these principles.

The complete banning of bonfires coupled with a program of waste collection by our Council is a good move, providing that composting will be done properly. Let's do our bit in Lions Bay and set an example for Howe Sound!

Connecting with Project Hands |

As my husband, Andrew and I draw nearer to the empty nester period of
our lives, with one daughter in Montreal and the other in grade 10, we
are looking towards finding new challenges and reconnecting with the
interests that we had in common prior to our marriage.
I first met Andrew in Tibet while we were both travelling. He had just
spent two years in a remote jungle village in Papua New Guinea on a
CUSO project running a bush sawmill. As a nurse I had contemplated
doing some type of overseas volunteer work but somehow it didn’t
eventuate. A holiday romance and 21 years of marriage later, again
Andrew will embark on an overseas project of somewhat shorter length and
I will get to put some nursing skills to work on an upcoming 10 day
surgical trip to Guatemala. Our younger daughter, Iona will also be
accompanying us and participating.

I greatly enjoyed reading our Lions Bay News - Vol II.
Within my own field of knowledge and interest as a botanical artist were suggestions made by Professor Ronsley re the future planting of the proposed medians dividing the new highway.
To date we seem to have little knowledge of the dimensions of the medians and when they will be ready for planting. Much the same can be said of the landscaping and treatments of embankments and walls associated with the highway. However, if our ideas are not considered soon and established, they could become wasted energy and negative history.
We have so much natural beauty in our Village that I agree with Joe Ronsley that we should introduce (utilize) only native plantings. We can all plant exotics and relish them within our own gardens if we choose to do so. Why not with pride display on our Provincial highway our own native plants which offer a considerable number of suitable choices and thrive in our climate, as well as provide a venue for the education of the public about our native flora?

During successive revolutionary developments in 20th century visual art, the general public has felt divorced from and often irked by the succeeding "isms" to which they have responded with understandable annoyance or indifference. Unfortunately, this type of response at the time precluded a sympathetic understanding of works being exhibited. A few years ago even practising members of the arts community were in turn non-plussed when in London the Turner Prize, worth thousands of pounds, was awarded to an artist who submitted an actual unmade bed.
