The peculiar maths in the title illustrates the fact that if noise
pollution is doubled from a decibel reading of 55 dba, the new decibel
reading will only be 58 dba. The math also reveals that incremental
changes of 10 dba from 40 to 50 to 60 to 70 dba represent 10- , 100-,
and 1,000-fold increases in noise pollution. When noise pollution
begins to exceed 50-55 dba, the effects are disturbing, unpleasant und
unhealthy - such is already the case in the daytime for many homes in
Lions Bay. At nighttime, to avoid the serious effects of sleep
disturbance, a level of 40-45 dba is considered as a maximum by many
international authorities. Again, nighttime disturbances in Lions Bay
are common. The matter is likely to get worse as traffic volumes on the
sea-to-Sky Highway increase in the future. Fortunately the Ministry of
Transport (MoT) recognizes the problem, and will be attempting to
provide various measures to mitigate the potential increases in noise
pollution, within its overall mandate of safety and reliability.
