RAISE A READER GRANT AWARDED TO:
LIONS BAY READING CENTER
We were indeed very fortunate this year to obtain a Grant from the CIBC Children’s Legacy Fund through “Raise-a- Reader” which is sponsored by CanWest /Vancouver Sun.
We were given $1,000.00 to obtain children’s books for our center.
Nancy Seow did a fantastic job and purchased 159 books for our young readers and we have set up a special area at the front of the Library for the entire Raise-a- Reader books. They are very easy to find and have inside each book a sticker identifying it as a RAR purchase.
Our youngest readers will love meeting Tabby, Snowball along with Cowgirl Kate, as they start reading our new “early reading books” on their own.
Among the new books are additions to the “Magic School Bus” series, “The Music Faeries” by Daisy Meadow, “Magic Tree House” additions. Rex Stones “Dinosaur Cove series and “Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures”. And it had to happen --- “Nancy Drew Mysteries” have been updated to modern times, so can “The Hardy Boys” be far behind? There are also purchases for our very young readers, beautifully illustrated, with simple stories to encourage our young ones to read at an early age. So due to this grant, in the summer of 2010, our children can enjoy so many new adventures thanks to “The Raise a Reader” Programme.

Lots of new books on our shelves this month…with some great new local
Plant and Wildflower books, suggested by our own knowledgeable Mary
Miles.
We will set up a special section which will contain “Pacific States
Wildflowers” (Peterson Field Guide) and “Plants of Coastal British
Columbia.” Mary and the Lions Bay Native Plant Group are trying to
encourage our residents to become more familiar with the plants native
to our area.

Glenn’s Turn
My wife Annmarie and I recently borrowed 2 best sellers from our
Library and when each of us finished, we agreed that we would each
write a note about what we thought of them. We agreed we would not
discuss our thoughts before hand.
The first book was “Paths of Glory” by the famous (or infamous) Jeffery
Archer, who has written some very popular best sellers in England, and
has now produced another top story. His first book was “Not a Penny
More, Not a Penny Less”. It was my favourite and it made Archer famous
and quite wealthy. It is common knowledge that Archer became an M.P.
in England, was knighted by Mrs. Thatcher and ran for the office of
Lord Mayor of London.

As some of our residents are aware, the Provincial Government’s cut backs have resulted in the total cancellation of the Library’s annual grant. We have depended on this grant of $3500.00 per year to allow us to buy our books and supplies. This means that we will have to find other methods of raising this short fall, be it through other grant applications, raising annual fees, donations etc, in order to keep the Library functioning.
The Library has been part of Lions Bay for the last 28 years and while we have seen a drop in readership the past few years we sincerely hope that we can, by working to-gether, keep the doors open. We have a group of loyal members of all ages who experience the benefits of using the Library.
We have also approached our Council to see if they would be able to assist with this problem as well but we all know that monies everywhere are in short supply.
We have been able to purchase some books for our new book section and suggest that we also look at reading some of our best known writers like McCall Smith, James Patterson, and Wilbur Smith. Also in non-fiction there are some wonderful real adventure stories available. So come, visit us and go home with some of our books.

Dear Colleagues,
Today’s reception was a wonderful celebration of our Lions Bay Library. It is looking just beautiful, and the newest changes make us all so very proud, even more than ever if that is possible. The Library is woven into our community life, where the young find a book or look for a video, where families converge, where book club members seek guidance and resources, and so much more.
It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Lions Bay Council, to congratulate you all for your dedication, and to thank you for your outstanding contribution to the Village. Each of you has made a difference to the quality of life for all of Lions Bay, and all of us in the community continue to be grateful to all of you.
Joanne.
