There’s a Bear in my Yard! PDF Print E-mail

Please read the attached about how to handle a bear in your yard.

The Bear Smart Committee recommends "Bear Spray" for hikers and workers in the forest since response to bears in their territory is different.  Bear Spray is capsaicin pepper which burns the bears eyes, lips and snout temporarily.  It works up to twenty feet as long as there is no wind.  You can purchase Bear Spray at Coast Mountain Sports in Park Royal South.

We have a sixty member Bear Watch e-network advising Lions Bay residents about bear activity and information.  Please let me know if you want to join.

Bear Encounters in your Yard

If residents come face-to-face with a bear;
Do not panic, yell or run.

Allow the bear an exit path and keep children and pets close.

Speak quietly and calmly so you don’t pose a threat.
Back away slowly towards a vehicle or doorway,

Bear Behaviour

Bear DEFENSIVE behaviour; huffing, jaw snapping, and slapping the ground!

Bear CURIOUS behaviour; rearing on hind legs to smell and see better!

Discourage Bears from your property

Bears will learn to respect human territory if made to feel unwelcome and threatened.

From a safe place, bang pots, sound air or car horn, yell, spray with hose or water gun.

Bears are Back in the Village - Summer 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Lions Bay had a relatively mild bear season last year with few bear conflicts, probably due to the abundant berry crop.  As a result, well-fed females may have produced lots of young cubs over the winter.

This spring there have been numerous bear reports about a fairly large bear with a healthy coat in the Sunset, Timbertop, Bayview and Oceanview areas.  This bear has so far limited his activity to wild areas, including the forested area next to the school.

Bear Watchers,

A very large bear entered a home on Brunswick Beach Road about 9:30 pm through an open patio door into the kitchen.  The bear opened the fridge and ate some muffins and bread before being discovered and running off.  A Conservation Officer visited the home but the bear was long gone and no immediate action was taken, other than advice to keep doors closed.  Apparently this family had barbequed earlier and the odour was still strong.

Please keep your doors closed, especially to the kitchen or food storage areas.  Keep your barbeques clean and completely burn off all meat residue or the several bears roaming the Village will be visiting you!

Hi Bear Watchers,

There were several bear sightings in the Bayview area.  A couple of residents mentioned the bear going after hummingbird and finch bird feeders, so please bring in feeders or monitor.  I saw one very large bear on Bayview at 5:30 p.m., got his photo and noticed a yellow tag in his right ear.

Also there is a bear on Bowen Island.  He has probably swam or floated on a log boom but a bear on Bowen is bad news.  They store their garbage outside, keep goats, chickens and ducks, have bee hives, fruit trees and bushes.  A bear will have a field day with unnatural attractants.  We are trying to educate Bowen residents about attractants but will probably not be able to save this bear from becoming habituated.  If you know anyone on Bowen, please spread the Bear Smart message or have them contact me for information.

Don't forget the Green Show on June 5th at the Village Hall where Bear Smart will host an interactive display

There have been numerous bear reports in the Sunset, Timbertop, Bayview and Oceanview areas.  This fairly large bear with a healthy coat has so far limited his activity to wild areas, including the forested area next to the school.

If Village residents are not careful to secure their garbage, birdseed and other food sources then bears will access the unnatural food and become a problem.   Our bear-friendly bylaw prohibits the placement of garbage kerbside prior to pick up morning or storing fridges/freezers outside.

Please report bear sightings to the Village office and bear conflicts to the 24/7 line at 1-877-952-7277.  If you encounter a bear do not run but speak confidently and back slowly away.

Bear Smart will be participating in the June 5th Green show.  Please stop by to check out bear-resistant bins, Bear Smart composting and fill out the Bear Smart quiz to win a prize.
