Memory and Hormone Connections PDF Print E-mail

Can hormones help improve memory or prevent further loss?  As women enter into menopause, they primarily want to alleviate symptoms of hot flashes. However, bone loss, vaginal dryness, dementia and more recently Alzheimer’s disease, which affect twice as many women as men are also signs of hormonal deficiency and imbalance. In 1988 psychologist Barbara Sherwin discovered the relationship between estrogen loss and a decline in memory in menopausal women. Sherwin’s studies showed estrogen maintains verbal memory and enhances the capacity to learn new things in post menopausal women. Dr. Farnsworth commonly places women (and men) on naturally occurring hormone support to correct these hormone imbalances. He states that “the key to treating hormonal memory loss is in early intervention.” He further explains the role of different hormones such as pregnenolone, estrogen and testosterone that affect memory.

Pregnenolone is a “building block” hormone, primarily made in the adrenal glands from cholesterol but it can also be made in other tissues including the brain. Pregnenolone is the precursor to most of the hormones the body uses which convert into DHEA, progesterone, estrogen and other steroid hormones. Pregnenolone has been found to help with learning and memory, mood and energy, speed of thinking, verbal fluency, concentration and focus, creativity, vision, hearing, awareness, and sensory perception. Human research with pregnenolone is limited but several rodent studies have shown it to be a powerful memory enhancer.

Slats of aromatic cedar
Memories of Lebanon
Herd cubes into finite
Precision.
Minute frames of diverse
Microcosms
In constraints of caged horizons.
Flat edged collages of
Pythagorean degrees
Holding shadows
In tight reigned discipline.
Fox-ear bamboo chaffs
At enforced confinement
And bursts
Through
In an ecstasy
Of fine tuned disarray.

Plant me high on craggy peaks
Till roots curl round
Unshaven
Rocks. Feel rough-hewn skin in
My embrace.
Let keening wind on storm-blasted
Days be my
Symphony.
Let me conduct with gnarled
Arms
Cradling butterfly notes for an
Instant, then whispering sad
Adieu lest magic dust on fleeting
Wings die in fond
Embrace. Fill my eyes with
Twinkling
Water
With foam and sparks as
Stars in a mountain
Night. Let me waltz with the
 Wind
As a swirling leaf in
Crinkle Pumpkin Time.
Draw me in sepia or deep
Ocean
Smiles. But plant me
High in my
Mountain dreams.

Rain Dance PDF Print E-mail

Bathing me in quick-silver notes
Of tip-toe highs
And
Broken hearted lows

Rain

Tap dancing like Fred Astaire
In rat-a-tat rhythm.

Flattened islands of rain-drops
Meld
Into seas of gloaming wash.

Dance Fred
But no more rain dance
Extravaganzas
Please.

Kick high your heels like
An Arizona pony

Dance me a rainbow.
Choreograph me
 A sun
Spun from pots of gold

Lick my rain world

Dry.
