Community Services Bear Smart Bears are Back in the Village - Summer 2010

Lions Bay had a relatively mild bear season last year with few bear conflicts, probably due to the abundant berry crop.  As a result, well-fed females may have produced lots of young cubs over the winter.

This spring there have been numerous bear reports about a fairly large bear with a healthy coat in the Sunset, Timbertop, Bayview and Oceanview areas.  This bear has so far limited his activity to wild areas, including the forested area next to the school.

If Village residents are not careful to secure their garbage, birdseed and other food sources then bears will access the unnatural food and become a problem.   Lions Bay bear-friendly bylaw prohibits the placement of garbage kerbside prior to pick up morning or storing fridges/freezers outside.

NO PLACE TO STORE GARBAGE INSIDE?
-purchase a bear resistant bin and secure it to a structure until garbage day
-purchase and install a bear-proof metal locker that holds bins or bags
-store non-edible garbage outside, place edible waste in Firehall dumpster

The Bear Smart area of our recent Green Show was popular.  We had 60 bear posters created by Lions Bay students as a backdrop, with information about attractants, bear smart composting and bear safety.  Thirty-five children completed the Bear Smart Kids Quiz with mostly correct answers, indicating our bear education in the school is working well.
