Re: Sea-to-Sky Highway Rockslide
On July 29 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a rockslide closed the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Porteau Cove and the Furry Creek Bridge. The slide debris covered both lanes of the highway and damaged the CN rail tracks beside the highway.
The slide was outside of any current highway construction areas.
The highway will be closed until further notice. Ministry geotechnical engineers are onsite assessing the stability of the slope above the slide. Clean-up will begin once the engineers determine that the site is safe. Once cleanup begins, workers will do everything they can to reopen the highway as soon as possible. Due to the size of the boulders, the clean-up will involve blasting.
There is no easy detour route available. Motorists north of the slide would need to return northbound along Highway 99 to the junction with Highway 97, and then south to Vancouver via Highway 1. Motorists south of the slide are being turned around at Horseshoe Bay, except for local traffic.
When more information is available, the public will be updated. Please check the Drive BC website for updates www.drivebc.ca <http://www.drivebc.ca> or visit www.theweathernetwork.com <http://www.theweathernetwork.com/> to register for Road Alerts by text message. These alerts are for unexpected, sustained highway closures and updates as these situations change.
