Current Events In the Bay Clay Torch Workshops

During one of the Lions Bay 2010 Torch Relay meetings, Carolyn Wray brought in the original Torch used during the 1936 Olympics.  I’ve included a photo of this torch.  As the torch was being passed around to all the committee members, an idea formed in my mind that we could create our own torches to keep as a memorabilia of the 2010 Olympics.  I went to the studio the following week and made 2 torches that could be used as a candle holder or a flower holder when reversed.   I brought these into the next meeting and there seemed a lot of excitement with the idea that people could make their own torches in a workshop.  I decided to try this by offering a workshop to committee members only at first, just to see how well things would go.  Our first workshop was held on May 24th and I have to say that there was a lot of laughter and fun had by all.  We made 7 torches and another workshop was planned for June, again just for committee members.

I am now ready to offer workshops to the community of Lions Bay.  If you are interested in making a torch and would like to joine one of the workshops call Lucy at 604-921-9718.

The workshops cost $20.00 for each torch you make.  This includes the clay components (which I prepare ahead of time), the glazes and the firing.  If you would like to have a torch but don’t want to do the workshop, you can purchase one for $40.00.

I plan to have one workshop in July and another in August .  Sunday afternoons seem to work for most people.  The workshop takes approximately 3 hrs to complete and I like to start them at 1pm.  We will hold our torches aloft and greet the world next year during the 2010 Torch Relay coming through our village.
