The Gardening Extravaganza and Backyard BBQ were a great success this year. It is too early to give a precise fundraising achievement but we feel safe to predict it was about $1500 raised to beautify the village municipal property. We can't do these events without residents coming out to support and the helpful hands who find time in their own busy lives to help out.
With that, thanks to those who helped on the day, the Fire department, the Works Yard, Rose and John Dudley, Fran McNichol, Steven Ross, Ken Miskin, Sheila and Philip Bromiley, Rudy and Trudi Luethy, Laura Fleury, Susan Rolfe and Susan Loutet.
We pushed the event back a few weeks anticipating that Mother Nature would be late, but she spoiled our plan by catching up on her longer than normal
winter. That didn't dampen the spirits of the die hard gardeners from waiting or coming back to pick up plants from us. We also kicked off with an earlier than expected Pre - order which was the best yet. Rona at 915 West First Street North Vancouver, Lions Bay Scholarship Society, Leong's and Windward Nurseries all contributed special pricing to make the preorder a great success. Special thanks to all who unloaded 400 flats of plants, John and Rose Dudley, Steven Ross, Wendy Conway Mair, Diane Burke, Joan McCullough, Susan Loutet, Rudy and Trudi Luethy, Laura Fleury and Philip Bromiley. And thanks to the works yard for arranging a good location to deliver to.
The Reptile Association was the big hit again in council chambers;
they entertained children for hours on end with all their amazing
reptiles. New this year was Green Feet, who build and supply custom
made planter boxes that you can move inside and out to keep your herbs
and vegetables growing for all 4 seasons if you like. They also
brought great seed starters that were a huge hit for the children and
we will have many new vegetable gardens around town now. They were a
great addition!
The Bear Smart Committee attended and introduced new garbage
cans and information plus a great raffle for those who took the bear
test.
A huge thank you to West Vancouver Florist, Maple Leaf Garden
Center - West Van for supplying great perennials and trees for our
show, Leongs for amazing annuals and new this year, Windward Nurseries
with great shrubs for the garden. There will be 39 new Weigela along
with thousands of other plants in the village now. The raffle was also
a huge success with great prizes donated by Atlas Pots, West Vancouver
Florist, Maple Lead Garden Centre, Garden Works, Brick’ n Block and
Avant Gardener.
The Lions Bay School also provided a great art auction with many
budding artists participating and parents making multiple bids! The
highest was auctioned for $45. Almost $400 was raised with their art,
which they chose to donate to Project Hands.
In the food department, we had a great BBQ ran again by Rudy
Luethy and Steven Ross and delivered by some amazing volunteers in the
village. But the sweetest had to be a bake sale in the kitchen, so
yummy and kept arriving all day long. I couldn't see every one and I
know there were so many of you, so thanks for bringing tasty sweets for
the event.
All proceeds this year are going to the Village volunteer
gardeners (of which I am one). We will be maintaining municipal
property and planting new perennials, bulbs, plant pots, etc. This
group meets every Friday morning. Please contact our head gardener
Rose Dudley to get on the mailing list. We can always use help - and
if every person just helped a little we can all achieve a lot!
