Sea to Sky Highway Project

The Highway Advisory Group meets monthly. Initially in a one hour pre-meeting of Lions Bay Committee Members to review the items and intent, then with the Ministry of Highways and Kiewit representatives over an additional 2 hours. Our next meeting will be held Thursday, June 25th.

The work is moving along very well. The final work will be completed by September 30th, 2009. Thank you to all of the HAG Committee Members for their very informed and focused work. Thank you also to the Landscaping Sub-Committee whose efforts have been truly amazing !

UPDATE ~ Sea-to-Sky Improvement Project ~ Lions Bay Section:

The Tidewater Trailhead slope at the north end is very steep. This will be reduced greatly and the trail lengthened down to between a 25% -30% grade. Fencing will continue north from its current location once the trail slope has been completed.

Landscape Planting will occur progressively over the summer months. Irrigation will be placed into the mid-section of the highway and the planter boxes. Kiewit will work with us to assist in irrigation in our new berm areas.

The new Lamp Posts will be shorter in height than the current highway lamp posts by about 2 m. They are black, more Village-like in design and meet the ‘Dark Night Society’ criteria for casting the light down not out…for those who are star gazers.

Sound Walls will be progressively installed from the south to north end of Lions Bay over the coming months. Final design for the Sound Walls has not yet been presented. This is anticipated at our Thursday, June 25th meeting.

The Brunswick Beach Centennial Trail pedestrian bridge will go in over the next month. The trail section on the Brunswick Pit slope will be widened by Kiewit and ashphalt grindings placed. The northern Trailhead will be created as part of the entry to the pathway by Kiewit. Kiewit will complete the highway portion of the trailway installing an earthen slope to meet up with our current trail mid-section. Thank you to our Public Works Manager, Joe Canning and the works team for creating and placing the new wooden bridge as part of this trailway.

Details are being attended to at this point in this project, such as rock placement on the west side of the roadway down from the highway to prevent parking and also some additional hydroseeding at Brunswick on the west bank.

New Signage will be installed with Brunswick signed, as Brunswick Road. We have requested the re-installation of Jake Brake signage in Lions Bay. We have also requested that Lions Bay is signed at Horseshoe Bay, as we are a municipality.

Police Pullouts are in the final plan.

Silent Pavement will be installed later in the summer.

We are working very well with the Ministry of Highway and Kiewit to ensure the final product meets the agreements.

Thank you to our residents for your patience and also for giving us a ‘heads up’ regarding fine tuning and safety items.
