Community Services Emergency Services North Shore Amateur Radio Club Training

Have you ever wondered how Lions Bay will communicate with the outside world in an earthquake or other major emergency when the lines are down??

Learn how - the public are invited to watch this exciting training exercise.  Lions Bay volunteer Jan Schneider will be participating.   Please come out and support him and other members of the North Shore Amateur Radio Club.

Members of the North Shore Amateur Radio Club, and the North Shore Emergency Management Office (NSEMO) Emergency Communications Team will be conducting an emergency communications exercise in the radio room at the NSEMO offices as part of Amateur Radio FIELD DAY 2009 during the weekend of June 27-28, 2009.  This event is a North America-wide amateur radio exercise for operators to practice communications in emergency situations.

This exercise involves over 2,000 amateur radio groups representing over 30,000 radio hams across North America.  Members will operate continuously for a 24-hour period starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and running through to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.  Stations are scored on their ability to make contact with other stations, both local and distant, using many modes of communication including voice, Morse code, packet, short wave, VHF/UHF, and digital communications.

Once the stations are up and running, participants then contact each other with a short exchange of specific information and move on to contact others. This puts a competitive spirit into the event in the form of a contest to see how many stations one can contact over a 24-hour period.  Have fun Jan.  We’ll wait to ‘hear’ from you!
