It has been a tradition at Brunswick Beach to hold an annual community party. Most of these events were themed and there are many photograph albums filled with very entertaining images.
In earlier days, many “Brunswickers” were part time cottagers so the adult party was held on Saturday night of the August 1st weekend and the children’s party was on Sunday afternoon.
ince the purpose of the party was to maintain a sense of community (and to organize future work parties), only residents and overnight guests were invited to attend. Each household had to bring their own table and cutlery to the chosen address where dinners were either potluck, steak BBQ or a pig roast. There were prizes for costumes and table decorations which ranged from “au naturel” to silver candelabra!
As times changed and more full time residents moved into the neighbourhood, it became apparent that people were too busy with careers, family events and summer visitors to continue this activity as a summer event. After much discussion and a few libations, it was decided that the first weekend in October would work for the majority of residents (including the children) and so OKTOBERFEST was born in 2004! Many of the Brunswick elders who had moved away return for this event each year and tell stories from days of yore.
The menu consisted of ham, bratwurst, sauerkraut and the finest of Senfs. Appropriate Oktoberfest attire was requested and an impressive number of outfits, beer steins and Leiderhosen showed up. Peter Anderson did cheat a bit with his hockey pants...but was forgiven due to having the best beer stein!
The following years continued Oktoberfest, but with a different theme each year such as SHOCKtoberfest (scary outfits), MOCKtoberfest (Hollywood outfits) and this year it was SOCKtoberVEST, (you can figure that one out!) held on September 26th.
