The Highway Advisory Group has been meeting monthly over this past year. Much has been accomplished toward the completion of the Sea to Sky Highway through Lions Bay. There remain some things yet to be completed that are an important and integral part of this project for the residents of Lions Bay.
Sound Wall installation has been delayed, likely until following the Olympic period. Both representatives from the Ministry of Transportation (MoT) and the Sea to Sky Highway Investment Limited Partnership have confirmed that the Sound Walls will be installed not later than June 30th, 2010. There has been some concern expressed about whether the Sound Walls were going to be installed at all.
Yes, the Sound Walls are going to be installed. This has consistently been confirmed by the Ministry of Transportation. The Highway Advisory Group is requesting that Sound Wall installation occur at the earliest possible time. The Ministry of Transportation has had a delay in the tendering process, along with engineering challenges that have only recently been resolved.
Kiewit has substantially completed its work. They continue to work on minor clean up, but their other project work is complete.
The Centennial Trail is taking longer than expected, but the beneficial outcome will be long lasting. The Centennial Trail has been diverted off the highway due to safety concerns.
John Dudley and Rudy Luethy have, through dedication, found another passage ~ the ‘Northeast Passage’ ~ and have begun carving a trail with their team of valued volunteers, south of the Brunswick Pit Road. The southern trailhead by Centre Road continues to await a MoT permit, this will occur soon. The Centennial Trail, is an important transportation artery for the community, as a walkway, that will be a connecting pathway to Brunswick and will be more than 1.5 kms in length. Translink has a walking goal within its 10 year plan, to increase walking trips. As our community’s population ‘Ages in Place’, making our community walkable becomes vital to our overall health and wellness.
The Alberta Creek Pedestrian Bridge installation occurred December 8, 2009. This is very exciting !
Landscaping of the Sound Walls will be designed with our Landscaping Sub-Committee once the Sound Walls have been installed.
The Landscaping of the centre median is complete and looks fabulous ! Any plants that do not survive will be replaced up to the first 2 years. Our Village-style lamp standards help to create a Village feeling. The overpass at Kelvin Grove is landscaped and will become a community garden asset as it grows over the coming years.
The Sea to Sky Highway Project will complete in Lions Bay by June 30th, 2010. It is successfully moving along, due to the dedication of the Highway Advisory Group volunteers working together with the Ministry of Transportation. Thank you to everyone for your commitment and teamwork !
