Community Services Historical Society Lions Bay Historical Society - Spring 2010

On April 27th, 2010, the Lions Bay Historical Society held their Spring Meeting at 9am in the Library. At this meeting we welcomed Councilor Ruth Simons and our new member Wendy Conway- Mair. img_7067_web.jpg

Recently Ruth requested the Society to have direct Historical input into the naming of all the New Trails that have been constructed linking central Lions Bay with both Brunswick and Kelvin Grove. This has been done. Trudi Luethy with the Trails Committee has finalized this project.

John Dudley is presenting the naming of the Trails list on Monday May 3rd at the Council Meeting.

Trudi and Tony completed three more DVD interviews with local residents in the past month and our DVD Library is growing. Joanne and Joe Ronsley, Rosemary and John Dudley as well as Brian Croston all gave most interesting interviews of their experience in Lions Bay.

We have several other people lined up and would welcome anyone who feels another resident should be included.

With the Library now repainted, some pictures including the opening of our first Bus Services have been reframed and hung on the wall. Fran advised the new Welcome Packages will now include an update of Village History as well as the Lions Bay Historical Booklet.

Ruth Simons reported the Village is considering applying for a 2011 grant to celebrate the Village's 40th Anniversary to provide a permanent installation not yet finalized.

A discussion was then held over a consideration by Council for a Memorial Society Garden and how this might involve the LBHS.
Tony and Trudi then reported on our discussion with Mr. Pike the consultant regarding the new Community Centre and what the LBHS would like to see included in this centre.

Now that the Olympics are over we can return to our regular projects such as the on going photographs of Lions Bay residences and Accessioning of material such as newspaper articles, Lions Bay Community News and lionsbay.net articles and photographs of Village Events. We are preparing to work on a new Village Booklet bringing forward recent Councils, the new Sea to Sky Highway and our Olympic Torch Relay. Sheila Blake, our hard working secretary reported she has the CD from Anne Page containing the information from our initial Booklet.

Council has requested the Historical Society provide 4 Historic photographs for the map kiosk.

The Annual Historical Society Croquet Tournament will take place in August and we hope last years winners Michael and Brenda Broughton are ready to defend their title.

As ever if anyone is interested in joining the Society please contact either; Trudi Luethy at 921-9992 or Tony Cox at 921-9496
