Interests Art, Literature, Humour Exploring the subject through repetition.
A common approach to an artist's subject or medium is repetition. In this the first of a series of artist insights, I will explain how this approach is taken in my own work.

It becomes obvious when looking at my work that I tend to focus on a couple key subjects and explore them through multiple pieces. This is common practice and really allows an artist to expand an idea and explore a subject matter or material. Often I will even work a subject using different medium, for example… I may start with watercolor, then produce a couple of encaustic and oil, then move to oil only. Each of the mediums reveal something new about the subject matter.

Size is also a way of exploring. Typically I will start very small at the beginning of the exploration and as I learn more and become more confident in a subject, the canvas gets larger and larger. Its important to note though that a large canvas is not always the end result because just as in the exploration through materials and mediums, the exploration through size will reveal new and exciting details and after working through a large piece I might return to a very small format.
