Opinion Lions Bay Community Garden

Interested in having a Community Garden in Lions Bay?

Since spring of 2009 a group of interested residents have been working together with the Village to secure land that could be converted into a community garden.

Why a Community Garden in Lions Bay?

Our vision is to promote food sustainability by allowing our residents to have access to a demonstration garden and community garden plots.

Having community gardens is not a new concept, but it would be for Lions Bay.

We hope that we could create an area that would benefit the Village in many ways.

As more and more people are becoming more environmentally conscientious they are becoming more concerned where their food comes from.

Whether you wish to reduce your carbon foot print by reducing food miles; have more control of your own food supply, ensure food safety or concerned about food prices or would just like to try your hand in growing your own food. This gives our residents an opportunity to do so.

Our demonstration garden would promote things like growing food through organic methods, re-introduction of heirloom seeds/organic seeds, demonstrate how one preserves ones own seeds, composting, to different methods of water conservation, information on alternative pesticide use etc.

For a long time, our society has placed too much emphasis on convenience. It is time to get back to basics and learn where our food comes from and how to grow it.

Our long term goal is to create many satellite gardens located throughout different parts of the Village to encourage even more local interest and involvement.

The demonstration garden would be a teaching tool to encourage residents to try and give them the inspiration and know-how. The educational benefits could even lead to incorporation of gardens in our schools, to teach the children.

Why don’t we just grow food on our own properties?

Some residents do! We encourage this!
 But…

Not everyone has the ideal growing conditions to set up a little food garden. There may be many factors that prevent people from trying.

Their properties may be too dark, too steep, too rocky, or they just don’t know how to start.

With a community garden, we hope to inspire many residents to start a food garden at home or join other residents who enjoy the same interests of growing their own food. Here they can share their knowledge, meet new neighbors and make new friends.

Where would this Community Garden be located?

We had looked at several possible locations throughout the Village and found an ideal spot centrally located on a plot of vacant land situated between Harvey Creek, Cloudview Place and Lions Bay Avenue. The land belongs to the Ministry of Transportation and the Village is assisting in negotiation to secure the land for us to use. The land is still subject to approval.

How will this impact our community?

The location is very private and not intrusive to the surrounding neighborhood.

Cloudview Place is a very short road and therefore, we wish to provide off street parking for 1-2 cars on an old driveway. Because it is centrally located, we encourage residents to walk to the garden or park in the Park and Ride (located on Isleview Place) instead.

Community gardens are non intrusive, and have a low energy impact to any area. You will find gardeners tending to their plots at different times; therefore, they have the ability to retain a calm and quieting effect in an existing area, while still being a beneficial green space that serves an entire community.

We wish to try to have the community garden in place and ready for the 2011 growing season.
