Interests Health, Fitness, Sport Hiking and Trail News

It is now just over 2 years ago that I was invited to join my wife and 3 other ladies to come on a Monday morning hike around the village. Bear season was approaching and they thought it would be good to have a man along too, as long as he walked in front!!

One of them suggested that since I was recently retired I must have lots of time on my hands and could send out a weekly notice as to where we were going to meet.

Since then the list has grown dramatically and there are now 80 people who receive the weekly email. People have commented that it has been a great way to meet other people in the village and discover trails that they didn’t know even existed. We have now extended the Monday hike to the first Saturday of every month for those unfortunate souls who have to work on Mondays!

One of the trails that we hike regularly is the new Brunswick Centennial Trail which my self and a group of dedicated volunteers have been building for over a year. It is now nearing completion and the only hold up is at the south end near the village store where we have to wait until construction on the sound walls is under way, so the exact location can be determined. It is looking hopeful that the sound walls will be finished towards the end of September and if this is the case the whole trail will be open by the beginning of October.

We were fortunate enough to have a lot of lumber donated to us and have been busy building steps on the steeper parts and if you would like to try it out I suggest parking in the parking lot adjacent to the school playing field and going down the connecting “39 Steps” to join  the main trail. Thanks to Herb Johnston, interpretive signs have started appearing along the trail and picnic tables and benches should be there soon.

As mentioned in Trudi’s article the trails within the village are now going through the process of being named and a map of them will soon be available.
We will keep you posted of further developments and if you would like to have your name added to the Monday Hikers list send me an email  - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
