Community Services Municipal Government Lions Bay Beach Club Sign

Lions Bay Beach Club Sign

… Some history to answer Community Members Questions…

Last fall I was asked by a resident about what had happened to the ‘Lions Bay Beach Club ~ Members Only’ sign. To my knowledge, it is thought to have been broken during a storm prior to this Council and Council did not have it replaced.

The resident asked if I could provide any background regarding the ownership of the Lions Bay Beach Park as there has been ‘beachside’ discussion over the years about whether Lions Bay residents own the park or not.

Yes, Lions Bay owns the Lions Bay Beach Park. All Lions Bay Parks are owned and operated by the Village of Lions Bay. As you will note below, while Lions Bay pays into the GVRD Regional Park System, Lions Bay does not receive any financial contribution for our Lions Bay Parks.

The Village of Lions Bay, on behalf of the Lions Bay taxpayer, pays GVRD (Metro Vancouver) taxes, which include the Village of Lions Bay’s contribution to the Metro Vancouver Regional Park System. Lions Bay residents can take pride in knowing that we are contributing to the Regional Parks along with each Metro Vancouver property owner.

The question about Lions Bay Beach Park ownership is a question that dates back to the mid-1960’s. The original prospectus for Lions Bay showed a marina. The residents were not sure whether they owned the marina or the developer, Bob Nelson, owned the marina.

The early pioneers of Lions Bay put their funds together and placed a legal ‘lis pendens’ (meaning lawsuit pending) onto the property, which put the property on hold until the property ownership was legally determined. It was confirmed that it was owned by the developer and thus was legally available for sale. The ‘Lions Bay Beach Club ~ Members Only’ sign was put up at the beach sometime following.

This historic sign was refurbished in the 1990’s, when a storm had broken it at that time.

This article was promised for our Spring edition ~ I hope that this helps to clarify this summer’s beachside discussion as we move into our ‘sunny’ season.

Thank you for stopping the myth - no part of LB Beach Park is owned by marina

Hi Mayor & Council,
Thank you for the confirmation of the ownership of the Lions Bay beach park, all of it, to the Village of Lions Bay.
I had heard the rumours and stories that the marina owned the grassyland close to the railway side of the park and if the marina needed it or the marina was sold, the grassyland would/could be lost to the beach park.
Nice to hear that it was a story, a myth, and that the grassyland all belongs to the Village for the Lions Bay beach park.
Cheers for answering that question and putting the myth to rest.
