Lions Bay Trails Update
With the opening of the Centennial Trail came the arrival of the first Trails Network map and brochure. The purpose of this map is to encourage residents to enjoy nature and be able to recreate locally. This not only increases appreciation for our natural surroundings, but helps to reduce the need to drive out of Lions Bay. Who needs the Grouse Grind when we have The Harrison Trail?
Our Official Community Plan called for a trail network in order to connect our community. For a number of years this has been happening behind the scenes by a small group of volunteers who are now fondly referred to as the Lions Bay Trail Blazers. The Chief of the trails, John Dudley, wife Rose and partners Trudi and Rudy Luethy have been the core group assisted at most times by Pat and Richard Grass. But there is a long list of people who have gotten their hands dirty that can be recognized from time to time wearing the Trail Blazer T-shirts.
The naming of the trails intended to tell some of the history of Lions Bay. An ad hoc committee was formed and through a very democratic process, the names were arrived at and approved by staff and Council. The brochure describes some of the stories behind the names.
Mapping the trails became a passion for Ken More, who loves his GPS and mastered the software for inputting the trails onto the land use map.
Signage was key for identifying our trails. Thanks to the talented volunteer Jonathan Wreglesworth who had just moved to Lions Bay and has his own design consultancy firm, we have the lovely signs that now mark the entrance to the trails and the Discover our Trail Network brochure.
The content for the brochure itself was a collaboration between various knowledge experts in the Village and I enjoyed coordinating all of these pieces.
Thanks to Mountain Equipment Co-op and the opportunity to fund these enhancements to Lions Bay through their Access and Activity grant, we were awarded $3,000 to cover the costs.
There are still more trails envisioned. If you would like to participate, the Trail Blazers are always welcoming new volunteers to work parties or just to join the hike on Monday mornings.
