Community Services Emergency Services "Never a boring weekend" for LBFR

As most Lions Bay citizens probably know, we Fire Rescue members train for four hours (7-11pm) every wednesday night, year-round, and supplement that training with more hours on our shifts’ weekends every four weeks.

Come spring time, a large number of additional saturdays and sundays are spent certifying our newest volunteers and re-certifying our senior members in our core competencies.

So even this year, while we haven't seen all too much proof of spring, let alone summer having arrived, we chose to rely more on our calendars than on an increase of sunshine, and have already gone through full weekends of our mandatory wildland fire fighter certification, two Auto Extrication courses and individual requirements for our emergency vehicle operators.

The latter is specifically important, as we are excited about the imminent arrival of the replacement for our oldest fire engine (Engine 63)! The new fire truck will still be older than our main Engine 61, but while of the same make, will be a good bit larger. This will allow us to dedicate E61 and E63 to more specific equipment setups for individual emergency scenario requirements. Naturally, however, it increases our need for qualified emergency vehicle operators, so this adds one more field of training, which we will focus on over the course of these next 4 weeks in June and parts of July.

One of the other highlights of early summer then, showcases our dedication to train (with) other departments: we will be hosting a certification course for the Bowen Island Fire Department in our specialty, auto extrication. Over the last several years LBFR has earned a reputation as being supremely qualified in this area, as was evident in our hosting of last year's bus extrication scenario in preparation for the Olympics, involving numerous other departments.

Finally, and this now is different from all previous years, our annual Fire Fighter Day will be teaming up with the celebration of our 40th anniversary of Lions Bay as a community. This celebration, too, will see a lot of work on our end to once again make this a celebration to remember. So let us already invite everyone for September 10th to the Lions Bay beach.

Maybe the weather will smile on the Lions Bay Fire Rescue's efforts a bit more than last year. But either way, we're sure that the party will once again play its part in ensuring that we will have "Never a boring weekend" in summer.
