Interests Gardening Lions Bay Community Garden is Finally Here!

Some years ago, I came up with an idea. As they say an idea left unspoken, (left unseeded), can never germinate, you will never see the fruits of your thoughts and so I set forth. Finally, after 2 ½ years, I’m pleased to see it becoming a reality.

After a long wait, our original site was turned down, and the scramble to find another location was on. Not an easy task, as the Village doesn’t really have many abandoned open fields available. Late this spring, we got the OK to go ahead to proceed with the community garden in the Kelvin Grove Beach Park.

Thanks to our donors Standard Building, Howe Sound Marine and the Lions Bay Marina we received the lumber and was able to build the frames for all our garden plots at once.

One hot weekend in July, some of the gardeners got together to build the frames for the plots and by Sunday afternoon some of the plots were already filled with soil. As I visited the garden that Monday evening, I notice that soil we brought in had the ability to cause various plants to sprout and grow rapidly. Actually, each time I would go down there, even if they were hours apart, I would find more plants popping up from the ground.

For a moment I would scratch my head as how fast plants appear and would grow in this “miracle” soil. It was amazing to watch!

Not all plots had a helping start, but some plots were planted by seed and with in one month these crops too, grew quickly and matured.

If there is anything called a designer crop or “de rigeur”, this year’s would be the “egg plant’. And yes, there are plots down there that are producing a bountiful of these precious “little eggs”.

Actually, there is a large variety of crops being grown in the garden. From radishes, beets, carrots, cauliflower, tomatoes, variety of kales and lettuces to kohlrabi, red and green cabbage, bok choy, celery, bell peppers, chili peppers, pumpkins, zucchinis, cucumbers, rhubarb, Swiss chard, peas, onions and a variety of herbs and of course the “egg plant”.

The site gets bathed in morning to mid-day sun, and the crops are just flourishing in that heat. It is a great place to work on your tan or sun burn.

You are greeted by many smiles that passers-by, you not just meet people from the neighbourhood, but from around the world who took that wrong exit and ended up visiting us in Lions Bay.

The other day I was delighted to see a multi generational family from Lions Bay stop in to rest up in the garden, as they strolled through the Village. From grand parents to their children and grandchildren, they interacted with the garden. Seeing this has made me realize that this is what having a community garden is truly about.

Even if you don’t have a plot, please come down to the garden, stay for a while, meet your neighbours, relax and watch plants grow.
