After a very disappointing start to summer, our little band of tennis players have finally been able to take advantage of the late summer weather to make use of our own lovely court.  We continue to play on a "drop in" basis on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 until dark and then again on Saturday morning from 09:00 onwards.  It is wonderful to see some others making use of this facility in the early morning as well as during any day of the week.

Unfortunately the promised repair work to the unsatisfactory court surface has still not been attended to but we have been given the assurance that it may still be done this year.  Nevertheless, our keen players have made the most of the challenging and unpredictable ball bounces

which result from the uneven surface and we have been making the best of the situation.  It is good to know that our keenness and love of the sport has not dampened our enthusiasm and if anything, we have probably all become more skilful players as we learn to anticipate which way the next ball will bounce.  More than anything, you will always hear peels of laughter coming from the court as we enjoy our time out in the open and in the idyllic setting of the court.

Our usual annual Lions Bay Tournament did not take place this year, mainly due to a combination of bad weather and uncertainty about the repair work.  As the days grow shorter and our days of fun outdoors draw to a close, we will have to hope that our regular games get going a bit earlier in the summer next year.  This will give us more time to prepare and organize some competitive play as we certainly have some very enthusiastic players.  We continue to welcome players of all strengths and encourage residents to make use of this wonderful facility, which is right on their doorstep.  It is always great to see a parent up there with a youngster, trying to introduce them to the game of tennis.  There is no doubt that the earlier in life one starts to play, the better later on. Nor for that matter is one ever too old to pick up a racket for the first time and unleash one's inner "Federer" and feel the satisfaction of smashing a ball across the net.  It is also a great stress reliever and any form of physical activity has great rejuvenating qualities.

This can be vouched for by the fact that our own Rose Dudley recently chose to celebrate the morning of her 70th birthday on the tennis court with John and some friends, playing a stellar game of tennis.  What a wonderful sight to behold and let this be an inspiration for us all to get out there and PLAY TENNIS!!
