Firefighter's Day 2011
WOW, What a Day!
While last year we had a great event in itself, we did get rained out by early evening. As if to make up for that, the weather REALLY blessed us this time 'round.
And so Firefighter Day 2011 could not have been the slightest bit more perfect.
A few adjustments to the layout, that now allowed families to stay together inside a combined food and beer garden area, a killer band, the Blue Meenies, that never once failed to deliver songs that got everybody's feet tapping, VIP volunteers Mayor Brenda Broughton, Bylaw Officer Chuck Partridge and our very own Chief Andrew Oliver, who headlined the all-new dunk tank added to the list of attractions, and the list goes on and on.

The day started with a crowd enjoying the beach midday, eagerly awaiting the start of the event. By two o'clock, the doors were officially open, and we had a small crowd from the get-go. Lions Bayers and their invited friends were quickly swarming to the BBQ for some great Burgers, Premium Hot Dogs and refreshments, and that line never let up until we took the BBQ down late in the evening.
Once the dunk tank was opened, we could hardly keep the eagerness of dunkers AS WELL AS volunteer dunkees at bay. There was just too much fun to be had!
And this new addition to the line-up never stopped giving: upon draining of the tank into the playground sand, kids were nowhere else to be found but by the slides and
monkey bars, building dams and taking mud baths... Just the right kind of relaxation after a day of completing the Kids' Firefighter Challenge obstacle course and burning excess energy in the bouncy castle.
Our auto extrication demo went great, and the audience seemed to enjoy an insight into the calm determination that is involved in the efficient execution of rescuing trapped patients from a damaged vehicle. After Mayor Brenda Broughton gave a Thank-You speech (of course much appreciated by us firefighters), the evening slowly shifted gears and turned into a party.
A good party at that, with the crowd barely thinning out and still going strong on silent auction bids for our outstanding prices and until the final announcement of the winners for the 50/50 draw and the raffle. And those were:
1. Mary McLaughlin - Earl's Restaurant: Special Chef's Table Dinner Event
2. Don Moore - Furry Creek Golf and Country Club - A Round of Golf for Two
3. Lynne Pauwels - Jamie Lauren Photography: Professional Photoshoot Session
4. Antonella Audia - Scotiabank: 2x Premium Tickets Canucks Opening Game, Oct 6
With that, we finally had to call it a (Firefighter's) day and clean up and clear out of the Lions Bay Beach Park. Time had really flown, and we were all happy about the fun everyone assured us they had had.
LBFR wants to thank all of Lions Bay for joining us for this outstanding day. Now, we already can't wait for next year's event!
