Bear Smart
Lions Bay - A Bear Smart Community!
Lions Bay volunteers began a proactive approach to bear management in 2000 and Village administration started the official process to become a "Bear Smart" Community in 2004. On September 9, 2011 Lions Bay was granted official Bear Smart Community status by the Province of B.C.
The Ministry of Environment developed a program to work with communities and lessen the number of human/bear conflicts and thereby reduce the numbers of bear relocations or destructions. The Bear Smart program funds communities to educate residents about bear behaviour and how to reduce food attractants for bears.
The Lions Bay Bear Smart Committee used provincial funding for creative education school programs, the sponsorship of bear educators, bear information signage, a Bear Smart logo and reports required by the program. The Lions Bay Bear Management Plan was the final submission to the government summarizing the Village’s Bear Smart endeavours, which resulted in official community status.
Congratulations to Lions Bay Bear Smart Committee, Council, Village Administration, Bear Watchers and the residents who changed their habits to stop feeding wildlife. Lions Bay is officially "Bear Smart" and there will be a ceremony to celebrate in the near future.
Lions Bay Bear Smart thanks Lions Bay Arts Council member/graphic artist Andreea Pop-Philips for creating the Bear Smart logo.
