Vandalism at Lions Bay School | Local Education in Lions Bay
Education Local Education Vandalism at Lions Bay School

It was very sad to arrive at our school last Monday morning to see pots overturned, plants ripped out and strewn all over the school with trails of dirt. The children were very upset, the parent volunteers who spent hours planting and tending to the garden were also upset as was the PAC who pays hundreds of dollars a year to beautify our school with native flowering plants. All round it was a sombre scene over a senseless act.  The virtue that the children are learning at school this month is “peace”, the complete opposite of this scene which felt very hostile. The teachers spent a good part of the morning talking to the children who had lots of questions about this behaviour and why it happened to their school.

I have always been so proud of the community spirit that is fostered in Lions Bay. Children are invited to participate and volunteer on community art projects, gardening, trail blazing, events, clean-ups and even business projects like adding to the Marina’s mural. It gives the children such a great sense of ownership and pride in where they live. I can’t understand that a person from such a community could be so disrespectful and destructive. Maybe it wasn’t a person from Lions Bay, but it probably was.

One thing I do know is that this is not something we want to accept or hide. Whoever did this needs to know the negative effect they caused on so many.  We as a community need to be more vigilant and make people accountable for their actions. We also need to find a way to help those in trouble to overcome whatever it is that drove them to this senseless act. They also need love and support to become better people.

Three teens were seen kicking over the blue salt bin on the Friday night and entering the school grounds. A water bottle with whiskey was also found.

Please keep an eye out so we can prevent this from happening again.

Very sad
written by Lisa Turpin , November 17, 2011
I too saw the terrible sight, I took a few photos in disbelief. The preschool students has just been learning about rule #2 Leave it better than you found it and we had weeded the area as part of our way of learning how to leave something better than we found it. My students were also sad to see the display of torn out plants and soil thrown around the building...Please leave things better than you found them.
