The 2011 season got off to a very discouraging start. To begin with, two of our display pots were destroyed during the winter by out of control motorists who clearly wish to remain anonymous. Spring never seemed to arrive, and our crew was greatly reduced in numbers.
Susan L and Lisa took on gainful employment, the Pikes and the Dudleys cared for too many grandchildren, the Luethys too many dogs, Kathrin and Jean left the country and Sam [a.k.a. Wendy] decided that cruising was a better option. Poor Myron was often left to sweep the streets alone.
Perseverance, however, is the name of the game, and what a satisfying end it has been to the season.
In November, under the supervision of Diane Phillips, somehow successfully juggling a new baby with soil, bark mulch and shrubbery, and with a grant from B.C. Hydro obtained by Brenda, a group of 32 turned out to landscape the berm at Kelvin Grove while another group led by Sandra Kirkpatrick weeded the berms at Brunswick Beach. In the week prior to that, Brenda, Mike, Trudi and Lisa had weeded the other Kelvin Grove berms.
Buoyed with renewed enthusiasm, we began the landscaping project in front of the Community Centre using some of the grant money and with plants filched from other areas around the village.
Our final work party of the year was particularly rewarding as we filled the boxes with winter greenery and generally cleaned up the area. With money generously donated by Isobel Chester we planted 150 daffodil bulbs in the newly landscaped area which we will all be able to enjoy in a few months.
We are delighted to have signed up three new members! Herb actually prefers to ski or hike so is a somewhat reluctant participant. Greg seems to develop an unusual number of colds on Friday mornings. But, Anne Marie is more reliable and is not only an asset in the landscaping field but has the best latte maker in town. Things are really looking up!
We are excited about a new season supporting our Works Crew in keeping our village one that we can all be proud of.
Thank you all for your continued encouragement.
