Interests Health, Fitness, Sport R/C Racing League

RCCarsThe Lions Bay R/C Racing League meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in the Village Hall to race radio controlled cars in a competitive and fun atmosphere. The league is open to all Lions Bay residents, ranging from Kids to Big Kids (i.e. Adults). Families are encouraged to participate! At this time our age range is spans 10 y/o to old farts, however anyone able to drive an R/C car around a course is welcome.

Adults be warned! The kids are very good at this!

At this time we are racing in two different classes. The main competition is focused on our ʻclub classʼ cars, which are not so much toys but serious racing cars with full suspension, 4 wheel drive and powerful motors. The other class is ʻopen classʼ which means ʻanything you haveʼ. The difference between the club class and open class is that the club class cars are closely matched in terms of performance. The club class races will be scored according to Formula 1 point rules, and will result in a championship. The open class cars will not be scored, and are ʻjust for funʼ races. At this time most of the interest is centered on our club class cars.

To keep the costs low and the fun high, we have selected an inexpensive model of R/C car for our club class. The choice of club class car is based on low cost, reparability, good performance and most importantly, local support. Mr Hobby in North Vancouver stocks the cars, replacement parts, spare batteries and upgrade parts. Being able to obtain spare parts locally is very important to prevent ʻdown timeʼ in case of a breakdown.

The club class cars are 1:24 scale LOSI Micro Rally Cars, and are available in a variety of body styles however they all share an identical chassis. They allow suspension tuning, gear ratio modifications, and very importantly, can be disassembled and repaired easily.

Driver skill is by far the most important factor, so changes in car tuning are not a large factor in competition. The cars are available at Mr Hobby 3-820 Marine Drive in North Vancouver (604) 990-5273 and cost about $110 dollars.

A spare battery is highly recommended since this allows you to use one battery while the spare is charging. If you already have a racing R/C car, please bring it to one of our races. If the performance of the car is similar to our club class cars, it will be permitted. If not, it can be raced in our open class (however not for championship points).

Each competitor must have a unique channel number, however channels can be changed in case of a conflict. Please contact me prior to purchasing a car so I can let you know which channels are still open. In case of all available channel numbers being taken, we will divide the races into heats of non-conflicting channel numbers.

I am asking that competitors throw in a ʻLoonyʼ for each evening to pay for the hall rental. Any surplus will go towards awards for the championship races.

The race course is around a series of pylons, and we change the courses around to keep things interesting. We may add some jumps later in the season.
