Maintain a Trail

2011 was a wonderful year for those of us involved in building our Village trail system and helping give everyone the chance to walk in peace away from the internal combustion engine.

We now have three big loop trails within and just outside the village boundaries plus several interconnecting ones such as the Kelvin Grove Trail, the Sunset Trail, the Pride Trail and the Circuit.

The big challenge for us now is maintaining our existing trail system before we continue to expand it and for this we need more volunteers to take ownership of sections and keep them clear and groomed.

I am thrilled to say that this is already happening and several of you have really done an amazing job of clearing and improving existing trails. Often when I'm out hiking I see a section of freshly groomed trail and wonder who was responsible.

It is this sense of ownership that makes living in this community so rewarding, that people are prepared to do something like this with no desire for recognition, but just the personal satisfaction of improving their surroundings and giving something to us all.

If you have a favourite trail, or section of one please adopt it as your own and look after it when you get the chance. I think the reason that many of you choose to live here in a rainforest on the side of a mountain is because of your love of the outdoors and we would like to make it more accessible so that you can truly appreciate the wilderness beckoning beyond your window.

Lily Tomlin came up with a wonderful quote relating to volunteering:

“I always thought somebody should do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody”.
