Many people new to our area may not realize that the waters in and around Lions Bay are a Rockfish Conservation Area. This means the only recreational fishing permitting in our area 28 is invertebrates by hand picking or dive, crab by trap, shrimp/prawn by trap or smelt by gillnet. In other words fishng off the rocks or from the water for any other type of fish is prohibited.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) needs our help to protect and conserve inshore rockfish. Since 2002, catch restrictions, fishery monitoring, stock assessment programs, and Rockfish Conservation Areas (RCAs) have been established throughout the B.C. coast. DFO’s rockfish conservation strategy is designed to alleviate further rockfish population declines. RCAs were established through an extensive public consultation process. If you see people heading to the rocks with fishing rods, advise them of the fishing restrictions, or, you can observe, report and call 604-666-3500.
