Summer is now here and we sometimes feel as if it was still the start of spring. The fresh grass has mixed together with the lush foliage of the weeds, the leaves from the deciduous trees have been out for the better part of a month. The large invasion of tent caterpillars and slugs have been happily munching throughout the village, with no care about our concerns. But, we are missing something. Oh yes, the sunshine and warmer weather. When that happens there is an instant pilgrimage to the garden – whether your own or the community garden. There you spruce up your greens for hours; to try to reverse what Mother Nature planted alongside your own plants.
The community gardeners have their green thumbs always ready, especially for those days the sun would shine.
Many of us had put in our winter crop last fall of garlic, garlic and more garlic. Makes one think that there is fair number of vampires in our Village and we are just planting our crops as a safety precaution.
As the season warms up more and more plants spring up and it is always interesting to explore the garden and find out what each gardener chooses to have on their dinner plate. Just like last year, there is already a large array of crops. Aside from the cold weather crops of garlic, kale, beets, spinach, kohlrabi, rhubarb, Swiss chard, bok choy had received an earlier start. You are now beginning to find lettuce, peas, beans, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, fennel, egg plants, celery being planted. Stop by for a visit during the summer, explore and discover which crops our urban farmers have planted or just come and relax in this peaceful and tranquil setting.
Recently, we had a BBQ fundraiser during the Art and Garden Festival & Green Show. Thank you to those residents that stopped by and supported us. We were raising funds to purchase a garden tool shed. Eventually, we would like to have a picnic table and a wheelbarrow. Please contact me if you might think you have something that we could need.
