Dear Villagers: Christmas Eve seems like a long time ago. Everyone’s contribution was appreciated and recognized. This small investment of time by the volunteers allowed our Village to shine with its generosity. Thank you.

There is a story out there that the new council benchmarks performance. It’s true. I will be asking everyone next year to volunteer again and hope you will agree to participate. Please continue to practice your musical instrument, singing, and solicitation skills with the purpose of surpassing this year’s collection.

I am on the Board of The Salvation Army and Chairman of “The Hope in the City Breakfast” held at the Vancouver Convention Center in early December. The Salvation Army has a very positive profile and many constituents have advised me either they, a family member, or friend has benefited from their services. At the Hope in the City Breakfast Mary and I were having some photos taken when it struck me that perhaps one of the kettles could make a road trip to Lions Bay. Through the generosity of volunteers and donors this turned out to be a success. Located at the store, on Friday night and Christmas Eve the sound of sleigh bells, music, and singing heralded the season and attracted residents and visitors to the kettle. Our Village’s generosity was never more apparent. The kettle was filled to overflowing, to the extent that the pedestal could not support the kettle.

I would like to acknowledge Cheryl Wozny and the Lions Bay Community News for advertising the event, and thank the below noted enthusiastic Villagers who contributed their time and talents to assist this worthwhile charitable organization.

Last week I sent out a press release warning that a tragedy was in the making for some herring stocks in Georgia Strait as an intense new fishery was being unleashed upon them. I based this warning on Fisheries documents from previous herring tragedies.

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s 200,000 tons of herring were caught each year on the B.C. coast and reduced to meal and oil. By 1967 herring stocks had collapsed and the fishery was shut done. In 1972 the Herring Task Force was formed to investigate how to avoid such calamities if herring fisheries were expanded in the future.

My name is Jonn Matsen and I am the coordinator of the Howe Sound Herring Recovery project which has had great success in bringing back the herring run at the head of Howe Sound as evidenced by the hundreds of dolphins and increased bird life seen there recently. By wrapping hundreds of creosote pilings under the Squamish Terminals docks we have provided a safe and effective artificial spawning ground for these herring. Over the past 5 years billions of herring eggs have hatched out successfully and we guesstimate that the run is about 600 tons. This is a good start but still not near the 2000 tons of the 1960’s before commercial overfishing and industrial damage of their spawning grounds destroyed that run.

Iʼm not old enough to have fought in World War II but as a child from 8 years to 14 I was brought up to its sounds and pictures – especially the moving variety.

I was a precocious lad who was caught up in the affairs of the day. In Grade VII I won the general knowledge prize the school held. My pal David Rolfe also won it – the next year I think.

Itʼs hard for people to understand just how wrapped up we kids were in the great events taking place every day. I had a large world map on the wall in my bedroom where, with pins with flags on them, I plotted the course of the war, especially in the Soviet Union. Rolfe was often with me and we worked on how we could help General Montgomeryʼs plans in North Africa.

At Lions Bay Preschool we attempt to make as many community connections as possible for these young learners, to be intrigued to ask questions about where they live and to explore the answers to those questions.

On occasion, the 3ʼs class have visitors who come in to connect these concepts with them, and our 4ʼs class hit the trails to discover. Every month the 4 year old learners take a walkabout from the classroom to explore and connect with this great community via the great trail network, which is a lesson in itself. The month of November found us working on a unit for Careers week and tying it into the inquiry learning of problem solving and strategies.

“The times they are a-changing…” They always have been, and always will be, but it seems the speed of that change has kicked up a notch or two. Technology has touched absolutely every aspect of our lives, whether we have embraced it or not, and just as soon as we get comfortable with the latest form … it has morphed yet again! Built in obsolescence aside, technology really does seem to be changing that fast.

As business and industry restructure and re-prioritize to keep up with the changing times, so do our schools need to keep up with these changes. What are we doing, here at Lions Bay School, to ensure that our students are ready to contribute and participate fully in this changing world? Well, so many things I donʼt know where to start …
