Dear students, parents and residents,

We want to be as sure as we possibly can that Lions Bay students are aware of an opportunity to apply for a Scholarship award. Awards are applicable to Lions Bay students graduating from Grade 12 and intending to go on to post secondary education or training, or already attending a Post Secondary institution.

Applications may be made by the student, or by a Nominator on behalf of the student. The Scholarships are provided by the Curly Stewart Memorial Trust, the Lions Bay Community Scholarship Foundation, and the Norman Kirby Scholarship Fund.

Details of Rules and Regulations and the Application Form are available at the Secondary Schools in School District 45 (West Vancouver), at the Village Office and downloadable here at Lions Bay Community News.

The deadline for Applications is 7 May 2012.

At Lions Bay Preschool we attempt to make as many community connections as possible for these young learners, to be intrigued to ask questions about where they live and to explore the answers to those questions.

On occasion, the 3ʼs class have visitors who come in to connect these concepts with them, and our 4ʼs class hit the trails to discover. Every month the 4 year old learners take a walkabout from the classroom to explore and connect with this great community via the great trail network, which is a lesson in itself. The month of November found us working on a unit for Careers week and tying it into the inquiry learning of problem solving and strategies.

Dear parents/guardians, students and staff:

As winter approaches, the likelihood of school disruptions due to snowfall or power outages increases. I would like to provide you with some important information about our school district's weather closure of schools procedures and announcements process.

The West Vancouver Board of Education will try to keep schools open on every regular instructional day. Any decision to close schools for the safety of children will be made by the Superintendent.

Parents, students, and staff will be informed of the Superintendent's decision via:

•the school district website at www.sd45.bc.ca, and
•a Synrevoice phone message, email, and/or text message

We will endeavour to communicate this information to parents and staff by 6:00 am on the day of closure.

Weather Closure of Schools (During School Hours)

If weather conditions create a concern for the safety of students in returning home, the school principal can decide to dismiss school early after consulting with the Superintendent. The decision will be communicated to parents and students using the school’s normal communication systems (e.g., a Synrevoice message, phone call, email).

Best regards,

Chris Kennedy
Superintendent of Schools/CEO
West Vancouver School District

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I wrote to you before the start of the school year to brief you on the province-wide teacher job action that began on September 6, 2011.

As you know, teachers across British Columbia are engaged in Phase 1 of teacher job action while their professional union, the BC Teachers' Federation, is in contract negotiations with the British Columbia School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA), the provincial bargaining agent for local boards of education.

During this initial phase of job action, teachers are carrying out their normal classroom work, but are not required to perform some administrative duties.

Lions Bay Playschool

The beginning of school has blinked past so quickly but we packed a lot of stuff into it for sure at Lions Bay Playschool!  Lots of planning goes into making the joy of learning happen for students, making sure everything is just right when they walk into their classrooms and that they are engaged instantly.  The students and I created classroom rules as a team, that we all understand.

Rule 1 - HAVE FUN.

Rule 2 - LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT.

Rule 3 - KEEP YOUR HANDS and BODIES TO YOUR SELF.

Rule 4 - SHARE AND WAIT.

Note: The following Rules and Regulations apply to Scholarship eligibility and the Adjudication process.  The Board appreciates that individual students have particular talents and skills, and will consider recognition of all Lions Bay graduating students to the extent that resources permit.

“The times they are a-changing…” They always have been, and always will be, but it seems the speed of that change has kicked up a notch or two. Technology has touched absolutely every aspect of our lives, whether we have embraced it or not, and just as soon as we get comfortable with the latest form … it has morphed yet again! Built in obsolescence aside, technology really does seem to be changing that fast.

As business and industry restructure and re-prioritize to keep up with the changing times, so do our schools need to keep up with these changes. What are we doing, here at Lions Bay School, to ensure that our students are ready to contribute and participate fully in this changing world? Well, so many things I donʼt know where to start …

It was very sad to arrive at our school last Monday morning to see pots overturned, plants ripped out and strewn all over the school with trails of dirt. The children were very upset, the parent volunteers who spent hours planting and tending to the garden were also upset as was the PAC who pays hundreds of dollars a year to beautify our school with native flowering plants. All round it was a sombre scene over a senseless act. The virtue that the children are learning at school this month is “peace”, the complete opposite of this scene which felt very hostile. The teachers spent a good part of the morning talking to the children who had lots of questions about this behaviour and why it happened to their school.

"A bird in a cage may flutter its wings but will never fly". Fourteen of our Grade 12 students - Isabelle Akerhielm, Chantelle Ashcroft, Tyler Gregson, Sidney Link, Mitchell Lyons-Stevenson, Laura Matthias, Sawyer O'Dwyer, Quinn Proudfoot, Samantha Schaffner, Robert Simpson, Samuel Spencer, Rigel Sun, Nikolas Von Krosigk, Nevin Welch - graduated from their High Schools this year  - Rockridge, Sentinel, West Van Secondary. They are ready or getting ready to take to the flyways of their choice, to enjoy a freedom, no doubt constrained by personal circumstances, but nevertheless a freedom denied to many.  We of the LBCSF wish all of them well as they set forth on the next paths of future careers, like the doves taking flight from the Tree of Knowledge emblem of our Foundation. What follows are short "vignettes" about the recipients of the Curly Stewart, the Norman Kirby, and the Lions Bay Community Scholarships. And "B & B in LB" means "born & bred in Lions Bay"!

Please see the attached letter from Chris Kennedy, Superintendent of West Vancouver Schools, regarding teacher Job Action.

We will strive to keep you informed as information becomes available via the West Vancouver school district website at www.sd45.bc.ca. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact your school principal.
