Library

It always amazes me just how quickly the time from September to December passes. This year being no exception as we found ourselves busy presenting some new programs at the Library. In September Thomas Greiner, an Egyptologist, gave a most enlightening talk on early Archaeology to our 25 interested attendees. October found us involved in the ArtSceneʼs 2011 wonderful day…which included the transformation of our community center into a beautiful art gallery…what a job they did! We were delighted with the resident attendance at our 30th Anniversary Library Tea.

Our change in hours to facilitate Playgroup and Tai Kwon Do is working quite nicely and we hope to continue operating on Mondays, in January 2012. Library Times for January 2012 are as follows:

• Mondays: 9:30 am to 12 noon and 3:30 pm to 5pm

• Tuesday: 7:30 pm to 9 pm

• Wednesday: 10 am to 12 noon

• Thursday: 3:30 pm to 5 pm

• Sundays: 2 pm to 4 pm

Being invited to participate in the activities of October 1st with ArtScene 2011 provided the Library a wonderful opportunity to invite our readers to celebrate our 30th year of service to the community.

The Library was as delighted as were the attending residents with the presentation of the Mural, crafted by our young Lions Bay Community school students. The unveiling of the mural was attended by Mayor Broughton, MLA Joan McIntyre and many extremely proud parents.

With September, comes the return of bittersweet normalcy to our lives. Programmes throughout the Village start up again and so it is with the Lions Bay Library. We are excited that this year marks the 30th year of operation of our Library. In honour of this special year, we are extending our hours.

Please note the following changes and additions to our Library Hours starting SEPTEMBER 7th, 2011.

  • Wednesdays: 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
  • Thursdays: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sundays: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Mondays: 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Summer is quickly approaching…well hopefully… and with it comes more reading time and  visits to our Library for the printed word. Speaking of which, please read Rafe Mair’s wonderful article regarding the changes we face with the digital word versus the old fashioned paper books.

I would like to at this time Thank Lions Bay Council for renewing our grant allocation for the year 2011 and I appreciate Council for their confidence and continued support in the operation of the Library.

We have this May purchased 22 new best selling books, which we hope will appeal to our readers.

It is hard to believe that a year has transpired since last I wrote in the “Seagull” and with its demise, the community lost so much valuable information regarding all the activities in our village.  It has been especially difficult for the Library to send out information regarding our newest acquisitions of the written word, magazines and DVD’s.  We must be honest in saying that we have noticed a definite ...
