Dear students, parents and residents,

We want to be as sure as we possibly can that Lions Bay students are aware of an opportunity to apply for a Scholarship award. Awards are applicable to Lions Bay students graduating from Grade 12 and intending to go on to post secondary education or training, or already attending a Post Secondary institution.

Applications may be made by the student, or by a Nominator on behalf of the student. The Scholarships are provided by the Curly Stewart Memorial Trust, the Lions Bay Community Scholarship Foundation, and the Norman Kirby Scholarship Fund.

The deadline for Applications is 7 May 2012.

At Lions Bay Preschool we attempt to make as many community connections as possible for these young learners, to be intrigued to ask questions about where they live and to explore the answers to those questions.

On occasion, the 3ʼs class have visitors who come in to connect these concepts with them, and our 4ʼs class hit the trails to discover. Every month the 4 year old learners take a walkabout from the classroom to explore and connect with this great community via the great trail network, which is a lesson in itself. The month of November found us working on a unit for Careers week and tying it into the inquiry learning of problem solving and strategies.

It was very sad to arrive at our school last Monday morning to see pots overturned, plants ripped out and strewn all over the school with trails of dirt.The children were very upset, the parent volunteers who spent hours planting and tending to the garden were also upset as was the PAC who pays hundreds of dollars a year to beautify our school with native flowering plants. All round it was a sombre scene over a senseless act. The virtue that the children are learning at school this month is “peace”, the complete opposite of this scene which felt very hostile. The teachers spent a good part of the morning talking to the children who had lots of questions about this behaviour and why it happened to their school.

"A bird in a cage may flutter its wings but will never fly". Fourteen of our Grade 12 students - Isabelle Akerhielm, Chantelle Ashcroft, Tyler Gregson, Sidney Link, Mitchell Lyons-Stevenson, Laura Matthias, Sawyer O'Dwyer, Quinn Proudfoot, Samantha Schaffner, Robert Simpson, Samuel Spencer, Rigel Sun, Nikolas Von Krosigk, Nevin Welch - graduated from their High Schools this year  - Rockridge, Sentinel, West Van Secondary. They are ready or getting ready to take to the flyways of their choice, to enjoy a freedom, no doubt constrained by personal circumstances, but nevertheless a freedom denied to many.  We of the LBCSF wish all of them well as they set forth on the next paths of future careers, like the doves taking flight from the Tree of Knowledge emblem of our Foundation. What follows are short "vignettes" about the recipients of the Curly Stewart, the Norman Kirby, and the Lions Bay Community Scholarships. And "B & B in LB" means "born & bred in Lions Bay"!
