HOORAY TO THE TASK FORCE  !!

~ UPDATE OF ACTIVITIES ~

Place on your calendar: The Lions Bay 2010 Olympic Torch Relay ~ February 4th, 2010 ~ 4pm

Wow! The Lions Bay 2010 Olympic Torch Relay Task Force has really been moving along. Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, June 17th from 7pm to 9pm at the Village Hall.
There are so many exciting elements that this Task Force has begun that it is difficult to know which to discuss first. Brigitta Shore, Chair of the Torch Relay Event Sub-Committee facilitated the development of our Mission Statement early in the Spring.

Mission Statement:

To celebrate the spirit of the winter Olympics by sharing the splendor of our village, embracing the opportunity we have to inspire, dream, connect and remember.

Welcome ~ Engage ~ Inspire

Our Theme is the Torch surrounded by the natural splendor of Lions Bay, which includes the Mountains, Ocean, Plants and Animals.

Results of our inspired Olympic Torch Relay volunteer citizens are described in the listing below. Catch the spirit, join us on February 4th !!!!!!!

Carving: Darrel Loppe, Carver, with Artist Michael Tickner’s design, has inspired the Torch Relay Task Force and is supervising volunteer carvers at Sue Forshaw’s home. The carving is an original Michael Tickner depicting Lions Bay. Carvers are working weekly on this 4’ diameter piece of cedar. It will be located close to the Village Office. We are thrilled!
Banners: A Banner Contest has taken place hosted by the Public Art & Design Task Force Chaired by Councillor Ruth Simons. The submissions from Lions Bay Residents were outstanding! The Banners will be placed in locations from south to north in Lions Bay, at Kelvin Grove, Central Lions Bay and Brunswick Beach. Thank you to all the Lions Bay Artists for their creativity!

Olympic Rings: Rose Dudley had a dream ~ and ensured that it was realized ~ with assistance from husband, John Dudley, and committed volunteers. Rose communicated and negotiated with all the parties concerned, in this case VANOC, MoT, Kiewit and the Highway Landscapers, to realize the dream of having the Olympic Rings in flower format in Lions Bay. They are so beautiful, people honk and wave to the Dudley’s as they are watering and caretaking this beautiful installation! Thank you from Lions Bay!

Torch Creation Workshop: Lucy Traini had a vision of Lions Bay residents holding personally handcrafted ceramic torches. Her creative and mentoring effort in preparing for and leading the first two community workshops held in her home in May and June, was out of this world ! I attended the first workshop and created a torch that is beautiful. This resulted from the preparation that Lucy had done in advance with the core torch clay elements required to assemble the torch and then each participant was able to become very creative with our torches. Lucy was inspired when Chris and Carolyn Wray brought the Olympic Torch for the first Torch Relay held in 1936 to our meeting. Her next Torch Creation Workshops will occur in July and August.

Underpass Idea Invitation: The Public Art & Design Task Force is exploring this endeavor!

Brunswick Beach Centennial Trail: The Brunswick Beach Centennial Trail will be officially opened with a celebration on Saturday, October 3rd. A continuing thank you to John Dudley and his team of volunteers and to the Ministry of Highways, Rob Ahola and to Kiewit’s, Grayson Doyle. The Centennial Trail will be the last leg of our Lions Bay 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to be held on Thursday, February 4th, 2010.

Lions Bay Olympic Home Stay Hosting Program: Sally Pollock has organized with the 2010 Olympic Home Stay team for Lions Bay to be involved. Sally has attended meetings and networked to discover a way that Lions Bay residents can be involved with this world class program. Now that Lions Bay has been accepted for Home Stay as a location, Sally will be seeking residents interested in having a Home Stay family. The Hosts receive Olympic Tickets for graciously opening their home.

School Children’s Mosaic Tile Program: Irene Dorsman is heading a program that will involve the school children creating mosaic tile artwork, that will be placed on a board and publicly displayed in Lions Bay during the 2010 Olympic Games. This will become a permanent installation following the Winter Games, on the side of the Upper Village Hall at the exterior north end of the Library, covering the current cement blocks. Thank you to Irene and to Kevin Thorpe, Vice Principal-in-Charge, Lions Bay Community School.
Inuksuk Welcoming: Community member Chris Page has created Inuksuk’s for wife, Anne Page’s personal garden, and they are beautiful ! Chris will create a welcoming Inuksuk for the south side berm of the Lions Bay Avenue/Oceanview Road Exit Ramp for our Olympic Game period !!!

Torch Relay Event Sub-Committee: Brigitta Shore’s Event Team is putting together an amazing day of events during and following the Olympic Torch run through Lions Bay! Brigitta was the event organizer for the Lantern Festival and her team is bringing forth many wondrous surprises for our Torch Relay Day ~ February 4th, 2010!
Bilingual and Linguistic Centre:     Community member Astrid Heckert, from Paris, France, has volunteered to lead in this area. She will ensure that a portion of the Mayor’s speech in ‘en Francais’.

Recently, as Chair of the Torch Relay Task Force, I asked VANOC for the official languages spoken in the competing Olympic Countries. We will attempt to have ‘Welcome’ in each of the languages of the countries of the Olympic Competitors.

Sponsorship: We are inviting Sponsorships ~ thank you for thinking of us ! … and thank you to our many volunteers for your efforts and full throttle enthusiasm !!!!!!!!
This is an exciting time for Lions Bay. We welcome your involvement!  Brenda Broughton, Chair, Lions Bay Torch Relay.
